anyways game sucks dont purchase it. if you do let me know cause i am stuck with it. After about 30 minutes in the beta was ready to quit. I would hold out for secret world, once it drops i wont look back.

My take is pretty similar to Joe's. I will say that after some tinkering the thief and mesmer were fun to play, but it's not worth purchasing. I skipped on most of the secret world info banking on this game, so can't say one way or the other if it's worth looking into. Funcom seems to be one of the best at combat systems, but we've seen how that too can be fucked up and forgotten.

I watched a live stream of a guy PvPing in this weekend's beta and it was looking hella fun.

What exacly did you dislike in the gameplay (or game in general...)?

Grouping up seems to be only possible for PvE, and even then we're talking instances and not world PvE. You get sent into overflow if there's too many people in an instance, regardless of where your other group members are (overflow vs main instance). That gets compounded in PvP warzones. Joey and I were on the same team approximately 10% of the matches we played. Plus side: there's no pre-mades rolling through people; con: you can't play team based PvP (very well).

Open world pvp is in a HUGE instance and you might be running for 20 minutes just to get to where the action is. After that, if there's enough people the game got very laggy. The "Event" system for world PvE was similar; a big enough instance and you might get lagged to death.

The graphics aren't horrible, pretty similar to Warhammer Online imo. However, they're concept art and 'stylized' approach had me expecting WAY more than Warhammer graphics. The Charr isn't as bad, but the norn looked like shit.

It's not a bad game, and I'll have fun with it, but the combat system isn't that complex. Joey described it well one night: "It's a PvP game for people terrible at PvP." Circle strafing doesn't matter, ranged is over powered (atm), and all those things that people who choose WoW over AoC bitch about, is presented in GW2. They jump you to 80 for PvP warzones and world zones, so the only reason to level is for gear, which fucking blows.

If you purchase it, count us in to play and have fun with you, but that's because we can't UNpurchase it at this point.

From what I understood when reading their features, that overflow server is their way of making sure you can play the game, even though the servers are full. So instead of putting you in a queue, they send you there. I'm guessing this part won't be as bad after launch.

If you don't really like the combat, have you checked out TERA Online? My main problem with it is that it's Korean style, but the combat looks crazy good. I'm not so sure about The Secret World's combat, from what I saw it looked like a dumbed down version of AoC's combat.

Definitely looks Korean. I looked up some gameplay and pvp footage on youtube, but couldn't tell too much about the combat system. Give us what you know?

I'm not playing it. From what I saw and read there is no auto-targeting, so kind of like it AoC, you need to aim your melee swings to hit your target. Casters seem to require similar skills. Spells seems to either affect a zone in front of you, around you, manually dropped or shot forward using the crosshair (FPS style).

I can't tell if you are wanting to try TERA or not Simon?

I'm willing to try it with you if you do. Joe is looking at secret world, but if we try TERA and dirty our pants he'll switch to TERA.

i watched some videos last night and tera looks like it might be a decent game. But the korean grind scares me.

Right now my money is on sceret world. If one of you tries tera and loves it I will put my secret world purchase on
hold to play tera. But i just wasted 60 on GW2 and SW should be out in the next few months. So until one of you has played tera and tells me its the best game since AoC i am not spending money on it.

I'm not sure about trying it out RIGHT NOW honestly. I got a bunch of stuff to pay for this month and Diablo 3 is coming out in 2 weeks and pretty much everyone I know is going to play that game.

In other circumstances I think I would of bought it for the fun looking combat, but I think I'll pass for now. Maybe if D3 is a total failure.

I may try TERA solo then. Word is it's pretty polished since the NA release comes a year after the game has been out over seas and combat is supposed to be the highlight. Diablo 3 was shit in a can so I don't have much interest in that one; no PvP seals the deal. If TERA sucks I'm down to try SW.

Downloading it now. I wanted to be down with Diablo 3 with you man, but it just didn't pack any kind of punch. May be worth looking at after PvP is implemented, though.

On PvP server "Jagged Coast" on TERA.

Made it to level 5 last night. Initial thoughts:
-Combat is different, feels like DCUO meets GW2. Some abilities you charge, but your bread and butter is a left click combo system with right click blocks.
-They apparently added jump recently, but didn't notice a roll/leap.
-Great Korean style graphics. Puts GW2 to shame. It's a little 'pretty' but the character design system was good overall.
-PvP becomes open world, a la AoC at launch, after level 11.
-The quests are definitely korean grind style, but no clue if it goes faster in a group.

All in all, still under consideration, but I view that as a plus in its favor.

Made a Warrior, the name's Hexile. I'll be on skype if i'm playing so we can talk.

I've heard warriors are good in pvp. I made a berserker but the swings are so slow and make you stationary such that circle strafing is impossible. I'm looking at warrior or slayer or perhaps even priest now. Warriors are supposed to be fastest I think.

After playing around with berserker, warrior, and slayer I have determined: there is no circle strafing in TERA. Warrior (dual wield) comes the closest because it's left click animations are fast enough to move around and continue the chain. However, each left click animation for every class has a 1-2 second stop animation that virtually makes circle strafing not an option.

The plus side to all this: mages are tougher to play than melee classes (as far as I can tell from my rudementary tinkering thus far). Mages have to maintain a balance of medium distance and melee range for their spells. Mages, or perhaps even better: ranged classes, in TERA can not simply hole up in a corner with the best safe distance and spell weave, dot up their opponent, or aoe the fuck out of everyone. To do their best aoe, they need to be about 10 meters away, effectively just out of range from a melee class with good reach.

Still determining what I think about the game, but felt that was relevant information.

So, Simon and I were mercilessly ganked by a level 26 while we were level 16 last night. We both outskilled this guy shamefully, but one good connection (he was a slayer, so high DPS) and we would die in one hit. Thus, world pvp does not scale well. Two level 16s kiting the fuck out of this guy, and it was still no contest if he landed a strike. Pretty sad development really, considering world pvp is all they have for a month or so.

When warzones are fixed that will take away some of the appeal as well.

Yeah, that's the point: world pvp isn't to be relied on unless same level.

I've never understood your hate for warzones btw. Repetitive maybe, but level playing field with an objective seems like it holds more spontaneity than random zergs and gankings. I get the DAoC/GW2 territory control aspect, but think player skill matters far less in those scenarios.

I remember a time when Ol' Joe was against ganking, too.

I'm personaly not worrying too much about those high levels coming in to PK everyone. That's what happens in every MMO starts (the ones with open world PvP that is). My best PvP moments so far has been when I initiated a fight with people a level or two higher than me or on a pair of "same level" guys. I got a few good ones when others jumped me, but in much less quantities since most of those initiating fight do so when they're sure to win (higher level mostly). But to me, it's not that big of a deal. I feel initiating fight you're not sure to win provides the best rush and the most fun as even though you got the first hit, your enemy(ies) got a severe advantage over you (levels or numbers). I don't always fully succede, but when I do, I'm damn proud I did!

But as I said, in this kind of PvP environment, there will always be people who get their penis grow bigger from "owning" others with their character level.

PvEwise, last night I fought my first BAM (Big Ass Monsters) as they call them. I gotta say this fight was intense. I'm looking forward to the first instance as I'm pretty sure it's going to be gooood.


And by the way, I think I'm going to stick with TERA for now, until you guys decide on a game you all like and plan to settle in.

I like TSW. Wes hates it.

For me it is the perfect genre of game and all my dreams come true concept wise.

BUT

It needs atleast another 6 months to a year of testing and bug fixes. Blood magic is off limits in closed beta so i am not sure its even balanced. There is a nasty like HIV nasty memory leak that not only crashes the game but screws with your ability to turn circle straf.

I love the concept and think you will two simon. It is a good sandbox/conventional mmo hybird. 255 abilities in game that every character can learn. You are limited to 14 abilities (7 active and 7 passive) at any given time, but you can step outta of comabt and switch your abilites in a few moments if you need to. You can be the tank/healer/dps/support just not all of them at once.

Unfortunately if it releases in its current state, it is going to lose subs faster than AoC.

All of that said I think it is the game for me.

I believe wes said there was an open beta this weekend you should look into it and check it out.
