I've been playing a bit on the free week. Not hooked yet. Adventure pack sounds good. I hated Khitai.

I'm really anticipating this movie in a pure fanboy way, and could be talked into playing the content for the same reason. However, I take it as a bad sign that the movie is associated with funcom in any way.

Just found this:

Morrison riffs on new instances, both the solo and group variety, including an encounter with pirates called Dead Man's Hand and another tryst based on the Island of Iron Statues from the original Robert E. Howard lore. There's also a new raid in the Temple of Elric that features Ela-Shan, a master thief whom Jason Momoa's Conan encounters in the new film.

Still want more? How about a new epic quest line and various loot upgrades? The drops from the team instances will be "slightly more powerful than the rewards we give for max-level content in Godslayer," Morrison explains. He also drops a hint about the adventure pack's new armor. "You can't go into an area like Turan and have that magnificent Persian theme without bringing in new armor sets." Despite the high-level nature of some of the drops, it appears that much of the Savage Coast content is aimed at players around level 50. Head to Eurogamer for more.

From EuroGamer

Eurogamer: Can Conan the Barbarian (the film) save Age of Conan?

Craig Morrison: First of all I'm not sure we need saving! We wouldn't still be running the game with the size of team and the operation that we have if the game wasn't perfectly viable, profitable and doing well. We still have a sizeable team working on the game, we are still adding new content - we've added as much new content this year already as any of our other competitors and we're only going to do more for the rest of the year.

We invested a lot of money in upgrading the technology for Age of Conan last year. We had a gap at the end of last year after the [Rise of the Godslayer] expansion launched, up to January this year; we weren't really pushing out as many updates because we were focusing on upgrading the Dreamworld technology that underpins the game: the server technology, the infrastructure, the stability and the performance of the rendering engine, and making things more accessible for a wider variety of hardware.

"Jason Momoa plays Conan really well, and it fits with Howard's original stories."
We really feel that 2011 is an opportunity to grow and get customers back with the attention from the movie and the new content and changes. We are in a position to take advantage this year. We've never seen it as saving the game but as an opportunity to push the game.

It's well known there was an awful lot of people that tried Age of Conan at launch that probably haven't tried it since. It makes sense for us to invest so they can see how far it has come in the three years since it launched. It's definitely an opportunity.

Eurogamer: Have you seen the film?

Craig Morrison: We saw a version about a month ago that was only about 60 per cent done. I really enjoyed it. What pleased me the most was the brutal feel, the fantasy realism we aim for in the game. I saw so much similar art direction.

They've been trying to make The Conan movie for many, many years. It was actually first mentioned to me before I worked on Age of Conan some five years ago.

Eurogamer: Is Jason Momoa a better Conan than Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Craig Morrison: That will be an impossible question to answer! It's going to be subjective for people of different ages and different types. I'm going to sit firmly on the fence with that one. Jason Momoa plays Conan really well and it fits with Howard's original stories. They've done a really good job of translating that feeling onto the big screen.

Eurogamer: Whose idea was putting film content in Age of Conan?

Craig Morrison: It was always in the plan, so as soon as they started filming we started talking to Paradox. Once they confirmed they were looking at the fall of this year we started on production. We were provided the script by Paradox and found how we could tie it in. It's a challenge given that our game is set some 20 years after the events in the movie.

We're working with Lionsgate closely to do as much cross-promition as we can. When there's a Hollywood movie coming out you want to get as much attention for the game as you can. Even just having the movie out there and a huge advertising campaign behind it - it does great things for the game.

Eurogamer: What do you think about where Age of Conan is today, three years after launch?

Craig Morrison: We're really happy with how things are going. We went through a fairly rocky period after the game's launch, but the Rise of the Godslayer expansion we released last year was very well received by the players and brought people back to the game. MMOs mature; you get to add more content, address issues. It becomes easier to retain customers because there's more content and there are more things for them to do.

We're in a good place, and the movie puts us in a perfect place to raise the profile of the game.

Eurogamer: Are the Age of Conan servers full?

Craig Morrison: It depends which server you look at: some populations we consider very healthy and exactly where we want them. Some are above and then there are always one or two for whatever reason... It's the same with any MMO that runs multiple dimensions: not all the servers have the populations of the others.

Eurogamer: Why didn't you develop a full expansion to tie into the Age of Conan film?

Craig Morrison: We already had a very, very busy schedule. We're in the middle of a content push, and by the end of this month we'll have done six new dungeons in the last three months, including a full revamp of the crowd control abilities and faction progression. We already have a very full plate. And we wanted to do something for the movie. But we also knew that we couldn't do all the improvements that we wanted alongside a fully-fledged expansion pack on the side. We'd have to shut down everything else and only focus on that. And we really didn't want to do that. We wanted to provide content to tie into the movie and be able to do the constant updates and the tweaks and the fixes the players want.

"We're in a good place, and the movie puts us in a perfect place to raise the profile of the game."
This adventure pack has something for everyone: a large outdoor playfield, solo instances, team instances and raids, all linked by a unified story. And it ties into the characters from the movie and also a couple of Robert E. Howard's books.

Eurogamer: The new solo instance - what's that called?

Craig Morrison: We're still working on which of the different instances we'll open to teams and solo. There are three main instances that we're doing. One is called The Dead Man's Hand, which is an island infested with pirates. The second one is called The Island of the Iron Statues, which Conan fans will actually know from the lore and from Howard's original stories. It's actually one of the only locations in Howard's writing where Conan almost met his death. That's probably the dungeon that will end up as the solo instance, because it's a very cool storytelling narrative.

One of the solo instances will be maximum level, which means you'll need to be level 80 to do it. One of them will be an auto-content generation dungeon (an ACG), which adjusts to the level of the player.

Eurogamer: The new raid instance - what's that called?

Craig Morrison: This will take place in a temple location: The Temple of Elric in Ardesia. That will involve the storyline where players meet Ela-Shan, the master thief that Conan uses as an ally in the movie. The players will be catching up with him and going through quests as part of the solo play in the outdoor playfield. The raid is the end of the conspiracy at the end of the questline.

Eurogamer: Who or what is the final boss of this raid? Does it tie into the film?

Craig Morrison: It's actually a surprise for the players. It's a nice treat for fans of the Conan lore. It's tied to Howard's original stories. We're taking an old enemy that Conan faced and placing it in a different context. It'll be a cool discovery at the end.

Eurogamer: Is the new loot going to be more powerful than existing equipment in Age of Conan?

Craig Morrison: It'll probably be a mix for the rewards at level 50 for the outdoor content. It'll probably be better than what's available at the level range right now - a slight upgrade.

For the team instances, they'll be slightly more powerful than the rewards we give for max-level content in Godslayer. There will be some armour sets; you can't go to an area like Turan and have that magnificent Persian theme without bringing in new armour sets. But we want to distribute them down through the levels as well, so some of them will be available at level 50 to people doing the solo content. And then we'll spice up some of the drops later on. We always want to make sure it's worth it for the players.

For the endgame stuff we'll probably be continuing the raids in Tier 4, which is the current Tier that's in progress in the game.

Eurogamer: What's the new epic questline about?

Craig Morrison: There are two or three different story arcs. There's an overarching story that explains what's happening and a plot on a grand scale that involves kings and generals and an attempted coup and the player won't know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

One of the two main arcs has players meeting Ela-Shan, the master thief, who's down on his luck and is trying to form a new thieves guild and you'll be tasked with helping him.

On the other side, players meet Arthas, Conan's pirate ally from the movie who, at the time of our game, is head of the Red Brotherhood group of pirates. He's having an internal dispute with the pirates about who they should back. Conan can't help him because he's king, so he sends the players to help instead.

Eurogamer: Why aim the Savage Coast of Turan content at players level 50 or above - won't newcomers excited by the Conan film miss out?

Craig Morrison: One of the strongest elements of the game and one of the parts we've always had the most amazing feedback on is the beginning of the game. Everyone that plays the game, almost universally, loves the experience in Tortage and getting from level one to 20 in that very solo-centric way. We've never felt like we've needed to mess with that. It works, and we know that it works.

Rather what we focussed on in the last three years was improving that area between level 20 and 40 to really get the players into the MMO. It's actually one of the areas now where it's got a lot of diverse choices.

Levelling isn't really that hard or slow in Age of Conan: players can get to level 50 relatively quickly. As soon as they play the game they'll realise it's not that far off. And when you get to level 50 you immediately get the chance to start another character at level 50.

We placed the Savage Coast of Turan content at level 50 because that's really where players want additional choice. It's a chance to add a big chunk of new content to the game's progression and solve the last of those content issues for the players.

It was a risk, but it was a calculated risk. We have faith in the beginning of the game.

while i am a complete homo for anything persian, this is just another another level of grind. Gear slightly better then godsalyer, means you need to grind out godslayer grear to complete the missions.

What are the differences between the free and the Premium offering?
Please consult the chart below for the main differences between the free to play option and the Premium subscribers option.

How do the character slots work after the hybrid model launches?
Free players can only make two characters by default, while Premium players get eight character slots. Returning customers get to keep the number of character slots they already had.

How many character slots can I have in total?
All accounts have a maximum limit of 18 slots.
Each account type starts with a basic number of slots (2 for free players, 8 for premium players). Any slots purchased in addition to this base will be added no matter what subscription type you currently use.

What happens if I go from Premium to free?
After downgrading from Premium to free, any characters in the slots beyond the two default ones can not be played, unless enough additional slots have been purchased from the item shop to compensate. Your characters will be there, but any beyond your two slots will be unplayable. You get to pick which characters will be your included slots once you downgrade to free.

What character classes are available to free players?
The following four classes are available for all players of ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’.

● Barbarian
● Demonologist
● Guardian
● Priest of Mitra

The following classes are only available to Premium subscribers:

● Herald of Xotli
● Necromancer
● Ranger

How much of the game can I actually play for free?
All outdoor playfields in Aquilonia, Cimmeria, and Stygia are available to all players.

How do I get access to the expansion content?
Access to the Khitai content is available via an 'expansion pass' - granting access to all of the expansion areas and dungeons. Anyone who already bought the expansion has this enabled automatically. Subscribers who have not purchased the expansion before do not have access to this unless they buy the 'expansion pass'.

Will we be able to play through all of the dungeon content?
Some of the instanced dungeon content will be completely free, and other will be accessed through new passes or expansion purchases.

Free dungeons:

● Tortage Underhalls (solo)
● Acheronian Ruins (solo)
● Bubshur House (solo)
● Abandoned Smuggler Tunnels (solo)

● Iron Tower (group)
● Khitai Dungeons - accessed through Rise of the Godslayer expansion purchase

Can a free player take part in all the raids?
Free players may access the beginnings of raids and the raid equipment ladder, but they can’t complete tier 1 without switching to Premium access or purchasing entry to more raids, which will be available in the item store.

Free raids:

● Kylikki’s Crypt
● Yakhmar’s Cave

Premium raids:

● Vistrix's Lair
● Black Ring Citadel (all wings)
● Thoth-Amon’s Stronghold

Can a free player take part in Sieges?
Free players may purchase time-limited passes to the zones related to sieges (Bori and Borderlands), while subscribers may participate in as many sieges as they like, whenever they like.

How much personal bank space does a free player get?
Free players get access to half of the bank slots that are available to Premium players. In the future, further bank and/or inventory slots will be available for purchase.

Do free players earn Guild Renown?
All players may contribute Valor, Glory, and Artistry to their guilds, regardless of their subscription status.

Do free players gain Alternative Advancement (AA) points?
Free players may not earn AA points, even if they are level 80. These are only available to Premium subscribers. Free players can however purchase items to enable AA point gain in the item shop.

Are there limits to which Mount Training can be done on a free account?
Free players may only ride the horses which require the Basic Riding skill by default. Premium players retain all their mount abilities and may learn to ride swift horses, armored horses, mammoths, rhinos, tigers and wolves as usual.

surprised it took this long. It will give a nice initial boost to population, but i doubt it will last. Hopefully they release this at the same time as the PVP server.

that is what i thought at first, but i dont think that is the case. if you read thru the faq you will still be limited to the the four free classes. Not to mention you will not have AA or raids. Free to play accounts will be a severe disadvantage to premium accounts.

New players will be limited to 4 classes. returning players will be able to choose which characters they want to run - character classes will be "unlocked" for returning players.

"People who have been subscribers don't need to worry there. Any users who has at any time been a subscriber, or a premium member, will have the class restrictions 'unlocked' as it were. So if you go back to being free having previously been paying you will have access to any characters, regardless of whether they are premium or not, but only those within your allowed slots as a free players (i.e. two character slots by default - you do get to choose which slots you unlock when moving from paid to free, so it is your choice which characters are available)"

also:

Access to the Khitai content is available via an 'expansion pass' - granting access to all of the expansion areas and dungeons. Anyone who already bought the expansion has this enabled automatically. there is also a faq that says premium characters who go free will be have to choose which 2 characters from the 4 classes avialble they want to play.

MY GUESS is that returning premium players will have access to all their characters. and they just conviently left out the the premium part. I could be wrong and it does not matter to me since i would play my guard if i return.

F2P accounts are basically just extended trail accounts, anyone who wants to play the game competitivly will need to subscribe.

I haven't read through all the info in Krig's posts yet, but does it appear that players will be competitive in mini games for below lvl 80 brackets, or do premium accounts offer better gear within those brackets as well. Considering the MASSIVE lull we are experiencing that gives renewed spirit to the context of world and mini game pvp below 80. Fucking with people leveling while waiting for a mini game doesn't sound bad for a couple months. Just my initial, though uneducated, thoughts.

I'd be in for low lvl ganking and minis, but I'm clearly not interested in high lvl stuff. If I wanna raid I'll go play WooW.

Grifts can make a significant number of lower level gear. It might not be quite as good as Catacombs gear. I can make all the lvl 56 weapons. PVP accessories, rings, necklace are available, as well as blue drops in epic mode.

If we plan on doing this, I will buy epic weapons off of trader as they become available.

Can't make anything below 40 though. I know where we can get good blue weapons for 39 bracket though. Weapon is most important anyway.

Hmm...that's pretty sweet. I'm...I think...yes...yes I'm half intrigued now.

What say ye Joseph? Sounds like we got some momentum and it'd be more fun with you joining us? Also, I'd like to not be the only one capable of hammer fisting a keyboard playing. I still have a few days on my DAoC trial if not?

If everyone plays free and no one is premium I'd start making barb equipment for 59 since you can't make anything below 40 right? Also, if you aren't premium will u have access to all u need for crafting? Also, if we're on the 'pvp' server can we even access gear made by your chars?

Funcom seems like they are going to unify the servers. Not sure how this is going to work exactly, but the jist of it is that anyone can enter an instance from every server. Cross server minis. Not sure if trader will be across server or not, but I don't see any reason it wouldn't be.

Crafting should be unaffected by premium/freebie

I have belt, arms, legs, and gloves for barb, and weapon(either wolfslayer edge or vilegrist 2hb)

I also have bonesmasher club if you want to go reaver. With the new CC changes, this may be viable.

I can farm for chest, head, boots(or pvp). PVP rings most likely.

Still a good bit of planning it seems, but if we learn more and that's the case I have no problem reactivating my account early to help you out (farming or whatever else is helpful).

its free so ill download it. but i always have and always will hate the idea of subpar minis. I have a pom in that range that i will most likely play since we will need a healer.

Wes are you going to be able to play more then 2 hours a week? only being able to play when you gf is not home or lets you is not condusive mmos. which is why DoW works.

Also wont premium plays still have the AA advantage? I know you cant train AAs over time while below 80 but you do train them via pvp and pve.

You CAN earn points below 80, but it is fairly difficult to do, except for 2 you can get via quest. Not gamebreaking by any means, unless they start selling AA potions via in game points. Either way, I doubt this will be much of an issue.

IIRC all the big perks require you to be level 80 to get.

The early perks scale with level as well.

If you don't want to start a new character, thats okay, but a bear or a tos would be better at that bracket.

if we do have access to all of the classes i dont mind starting a new character, but I still think we are going to be limited to the 4 basic classes.

I still think everyone is overlooking that we will be on a new server if they do the pvp server, so Joe wouldn't have that low level pom and you have one character to work with; that's it.

As to my play time, fair question. I'm not sure when this is all supposed to go down as I have yet to read the fine print but I have a couple scenarios in my life right now. My GF may move to Baltimore with me, which is likely to yield an overall decrease. If she doesn't move with me, I'm there solo and will have much more time. Either way, don't count on your preferred amount of time for me: it's Johns Hopkins. I will be in survival mode and looking to work my ass off to make an impression. I am currently traveling a lot since it's conference time in my profession, please keep that in mind. More importantly, there hasn't been a game to hunker down for. I can manage the GF aggro either way, but I'm picking my fights, and we haven't played anything worth advocating for in months. We get competitive in AoC, or SW drops and I'll make myself available more.

I also think we need to consider the goal here. Joe, u don't like bracketizing the minis. Fair enough, but a couple hours a night may be perfectly acceptable considering we don't give a shit about leveling or gear. PvP after we're in a specific bracket does not require me to invest much. We also will not likely be looking at AoC for a truly substantial period of time. That era has passed. We're looking at 2-3 months of ganking and PvP fun, just like everything else on the docket for the summer (and fall?). Try not to make this idea any more or less than it is. It's us fucking around in an oldie so we get to play together and have something to do. Serenity now.
